How to Start Your Day with God

Spending time with the Lord in the morning is so important in setting up our day in peace and hope and strength. But it’s hard, right?

How do we seek God in the morning? Here are a few tips:

  • Don’t look at your phone (set it to do not disturb until after your devotional time)
  • Have your bible, journal, devotional out on the table or by the couch (wherever you do devotions)
  • Have a bible reading plan or devotional so that you know what you will be reading
  • Commit to going to this spot first thing (or after the bathroom 😉 )
  • Have anything else you need ready – water, bowl of cereal, blanket

These things have helped me to commit this time to the Lord despite all the other things calling to my attention. And even just a few minutes set aside is enough to focus my mind and heart on the Lord.

How to Start Your Morning Devotions

God sees our hearts. Our “devotions” don’t need to be perfect!

I would suggest starting with spending time in God’s Word and in prayer.

Sometimes I start with prayer, sometimes I start with my Bible. Sometimes I have a devotional or Bible reading plan. And I typically have a space to write prayers down.

Don’t let the structure of your devotional time overwhelm you.

I’ve created several devotionals over in my shop and I structure them with all of these pieces.

I believe that writing down Scripture is one of the most powerful things you can do. I often will write down a verse and pray through it if I’m stuck.

Start Your Day with Prayer

Praying Scripture or having written prayers to help you start your day is powerful. The Lord hears us when we pray.

He desires us to speak to Him.

And yet in the morning, my mind is tired and drowsy and prayer is hard to formulate.

Having prayers written down or even just writing them down in the morning really helps me to focus and be steadfast in prayer.

This is a powerful way to use the morning verses to start your day – by praying them over your morning and over your day.

Morning Prayer to Start Your Day

Lord, I surrender my heart to You right now. I invite You in, I invite your Spirit to come upon me, to strengthen me and renew me. I praise You that Your mercies are new every morning. That You have promised joy in the morning. I thank you that You satisfy us and I pray that You would satisfy me this morning as I seek You. I surrender my plans to You today and ask that You would be my guide and my sustainer. Let all that I do be done for You, I commit my ways to You. Be with me, Lord. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Why is it important to start your day with God?

I didn’t realize how necessary it was to start the day with the Lord until I had my first baby and no longer could slide through my mornings.

Not only did I need strength, but I had to get up even earlier to find that time with the Lord. And when I didn’t, I noticed. I was grumpier, more tired and way more easily overwhelmed.

When we start our day with the Lord, we orient our minds in a way that allows us to be receptive to His Spirit throughout the day. We commit our plans and surrender our desires to Him. And in doing so, we grow closer to Him and to His will.

I hope that you were able to find some encouragement in these morning bible verses to start your day with the Lord
