Overcoming Anxiety: 3 Surprising Truths to Help You Fight

Overcoming anxiety is possible.

I have felt anxiety’s grip on my mind.

I’ve tumbled through bad days and good days, all the while waiting for the next attack.

And in that waiting, fear and worry cloak your every move.

What will be the next trigger?

What can I avoid to stay safe?

Overcoming anxiety is possible. Satan wants to convince you of these 3 lies. But it's time to take a stand against Satan and learn the truth to overcome.

Anxiety is powerful. It can be caused by so many things.

Trauma, depression, genetics, fear, etc., etc.

One of the biggest obstacles to overcoming anxiety is recognizing the lies we learn to believe about it.

Satan wants you stuck, believing there is no way out.

But there is.

Anxiety is powerful, but God is so much stronger.

Where anxiety attacks you, God wants to protect you.

So let’s take a look at some of these most gripping lies.

As you learn to believe the truth, you will find the strength to stand against Satan’s attempts to paralyze you.

Lie: God Abandoned Me

I have been there - so deeply believing this lie that I was ready to give up on my faith.

The pain of an anxiety attack leaves you feeling helpless and hopeless. It tears apart your peace and rest.

In those moments, I cried out to God, “Make it stop.” “Rescue me.”

But the anxiety pressed on.

In the beginning I thought something was wrong with my prayers. They weren’t strong enough. They weren’t loud enough.

But over time, I started to believe the lie that God had just abandoned me in the times I needed Him most.

Doesn’t the Bible say He protects? I sure didn’t feel protected.

But believing this only caused the anxiety to worsen.

The truth is: God will never leave you.

We may feel abandoned. We may feel alone. But God is there.

Through every anxious moment and through every paralyzing fear, God is with you.

Satan wants nothing more than for you to get stuck in the lie that you are alone.

But in this world, we are told that we will suffer.

"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." -John 16:33

When you feel alone or abandoned in anxiety, remember that your hope is in the one who has overcome the world. And He has a plan for you.

He wants to bring you healing and lead you to overcoming anxiety.

He will use your suffering to bring His glorious love to this world. No one can snatch you from His hands.

Don’t allow your feelings to dictate your faith. God’s plan is good, even when you cannot see it.

Lie: I Need Control

One of the scariest parts of an anxiety attack is feeling utterly out of control. The feeling that you have absolutely no say in what happens to you and no control over how your body feels.

It’s scary. And it sucks.

But, grasping for control will only increase your anxiety.

I’ve done so many things to try and grasp at control in my life when anxiety seemed to take over.

And each attempt left me feeling exhausted and even more out of control.

The truth is: God is completely in control of every moment.

It is so hard to surrender this control to the Lord. Especially if you struggle to believe that He is with you.

But, we are told that when we cast our anxiety and our cares on the Lord, we will find peace.

We are called to take that first step. When we do, God will fill us with His everlasting peace.

Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you -1 Peter 5:7

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” -Matthew 11:28

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. -Philippians 4:6-7

There are so many promises that God will deliver you from your anxiety in Scripture.

Cling to these promises. Although you may suffer for a little while, as you learn to release control to the Lord, He will bring you peace and rest.

Lie: No One Will Understand

Believing that you are alone in your struggle with anxiety causes you to feel isolated and ashamed.

I’ve been there. I thought there was something wrong with me. Why couldn’t I shake this horrible feeling? Why was I so afraid?

I tried to tough it out and pretend like everything was fine.

But everything wasn’t fine.

And it wasn’t until I could admit that, that I found help.

You can’t walk through this struggle without the support and encouragement of friends, family, mentors, counselors.

These people are there to help you stand when you feel weak, and to help you move forward when you feel stuck.

The truth is: there are so many people that struggle with anxiety on a daily basis.

You are not alone. Look around. Anxiety is out there. Others are feeling alone too.

Sometimes, you need to take the leap of faith to share your story and share your pain. When you do this, you can find accountability and support.

And you can also open the door for another to find that same support.

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. -Galatians 6:2

When we share our struggles, we offer up the opportunity to share in our burdens.

Together we can lead each other to overcoming anxiety.

This fellowship is what the body of Christ is for.

Don’t believe that you are alone in your anxiety. It is hard to step out and share, but it will open the door to tremendous healing.

Satan wants you believing these lies about your anxiety.

But cling to the truth that you can find in Scripture. Cling to the hope that you can find in God’s peace.

And in doing so, you will take your stand.
