Overcoming Satan’s Attacks: 3 Ways Prayer Will Help You Fight

Have you ever struggled in overcoming Satan's attacks on your mind or your life?

My mind has been tossed back and forth in the sea of lies.

At times, I’ve believed them and lived in them.

And in these times, I’ve become anxious, depressed, burdened and overwhelmed.

Have you ever felt this way?

Have you ever struggled in overcoming Satan's attacks on your mind or your life? Prayer is powerful in taking a stand against Satan. Read to learn how.

Satan has a way of attacking our minds at just the right time in just the right way. And if we aren’t prepared, we believe him.

But what if we had what it takes to stand up to the lies? What if there was a way to overcome over single one of Satan’s attacks?

When we get caught up in the lies, we become surrounded by darkness. And in that darkness, it becomes harder and harder to find the light.

But the light is there, in the power of Christ. And in salvation, we have complete access to that power.

So how do we live it out? How do we find the strength to overcome Satan’s attacks?

Prayer Reveals the Lies

Prayer. Real, gut-honest, and powerful prayer.

In order to take a stand against Satan, you must bring your thoughts, your successes and your pains into the light.

Satan thrives in darkness. And he will fight for you to stay in that darkness with him.

What part of your life is in the dark right now?

A painful past? A broken relationship? A self-earned success?

These parts of our lives need to be brought into the light.

So what does prayer have to do with any of this?

When we pray, we invite God into our hearts and our minds.

Prayer reveals Satan’s lies by bringing them into the light of Christ.

There are 3 very powerful aspects of prayer that equip you to overcome Satan’s attacks.

1. Dedication

Prayer takes discipline. It takes commitment.

Like any intimate relationship, the Lord wants more than a hurried, 5 minutes before you fall asleep.

Dedicating time to prayer creates a space for God to work.

He wants to heal you, to strengthen you, to fill you with peace and hope and joy.

But He waits for you to invite Him in.

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. -2 Timothy 1:7

In Christ, you have a spirit of self-discipline.

You have what it takes to dedicate time to the Lord.

How can you dedicate more time to the Lord in prayer this week?

2. Surrender

Christ waits for you to lay your life at His feet. He promises us  so many things throughout Scripture when we surrender to Him.

I spend a few minutes at the beginning of my morning prayer surrendering all that I hold close, all that I’m worried about or all that I’m excited about that day to the Lord.

It’s not easy. Sometimes I forget and sometimes I fail to truly surrender it all to Him.

But when we surrender something to the Lord, we remind Satan that our life rests in Christ’s hands.

Surrender is powerful in overcoming Satan’s attacks.

What can you surrender to the Lord in prayer today?

3. The Name of Jesus

And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. -John 14:13

We are told to call on the name of Jesus. When we do, the power of Christ answers our prayer.

Calling on the name of Jesus is powerful.

Sometimes when I feel tangled in Satan’s grip, I utter the name of Jesus as a reminder to both Satan and my own heart that Christ has overcome and His power rests on me.

Resist the devil and he will flee. -James 4:7

When we call out to Jesus boldly in prayer, Satan will flee. He has to.

If you feel trapped in Satan’s lies or overwhelmed by Satan’s attacks, there is hope.

Call to Christ in prayer.

"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." - John 16:33

  1. Thank you so much for this. I struggle every day with unloving feelings toward my husband and stepdaughter. I pray for God’s love to enter my heart, heal my heart in Lord! Heal me, please! In Jesus mighty name! Amen

  2. So powerful. Why do we sometimes just not even think about taking these things to God in prayer? It is our most powerful defenses against the ups and downs of life. Thank you!

  3. Great post, Nicole! I’ve enjoyed this series also! Satan likes to tell me lies, but I’m getting better about calling his bluff;)

  4. What a wonderfully practical and useful post. I love this. Prayer is becoming such an after-thought for so many Christians. I think its because of what you said about discipline, surrender, etc.

Thanks for posting and reminding me of the spiritual resource I have!

  5. Thank you for this post, Nicole! It was convicting, in a good way of course! I pray every day, but not with the focus or intensity that I would like.

  6. Beautifully written, Nicole. So agree – if we’re not on guard, we could be doomed. Surrender is so huge – something that I think we all as humans have a difficult time doing.

  7. This is so good! I think we, as Christians, forget that we’re in a battle. And part of that is being attacked by the enemy. And a lot of the time, we lash out at other people when really we just have to pray, and let God handle it!

  8. Love this series! And the encouragement to pray. We find such strength in prayer. I like to think prayer activates our armor, and without our armor we aren’t ready for battle, and every day is a battle! Hugs.
