It wasn’t until years into my marriage that I learned the power of praying fervent prayers for my husband. My marriage wasn’t in a bad place, but when I began praying I saw transformation.
Over the years as we have struggled with different things, I’ve fallen out of the habit of praying for my husband and praying for my marriage and I notice a powerful difference.

Lord, thank you so much for my husband and for the truth in Your word about Your call for submission. I pray that as my husband grows that You would teach him to submit to You and to lead me and our family well. I pray for my own heart, that You would help me to submit as You have called me to. I pray that Your Spirit would guide my husband to be the leader that You call him to be. Grow our marriage and our family in this way. Strengthen my husband to lead us and convict him as he seeks You, to do Your will. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Prayer for My Husband’s Faith
Watch! Stand firm in the faith! Be courageous! Be strong! -1 Corinthians 16:13
Lord, strengthen my husband’s faith. I lift up his faith to You today. Place people and encouragement in his path that will help him to grow in his faith. May he seek You consistently and fervently. May he watch for Satan’s schemes and stand firm in his faith as trials come. Fill him with courage and strength in all things. Help me to be an encouragement to him and to shine Your light to him as well. May Your Spirit grow a powerful faith within him. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Prayer for Guidance for My Husband
Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path. -Psalm 119:105
Lord, I pray that You would guide my husband in all that He does. I pray that Your Spirit would direct and convict and light the path for my husband in all decisions that he faces. Draw him to You as he walks through his day and as he seeks You, I ask that You would make Your will known to him. Give him wisdom and discernment to know Your will for his decisions, especially in those that affect our family. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Prayer for a Godly Marriage
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself up for it. -Ephesians 5:25
Lord, I submit my marriage to You right now. I ask that You would enter into our marriage and lead us to deeper intimacy in You. Lord, help me to submit to my husband as You have called me to. Fill me with Your Spirit and convict me and teach me to do this well. Guide me as I seek to love my husband as You call me to. I also ask that You would convict my husband and guide him as he seeks to love me just as Christ loved the church. I pray against any of Satan’s schemes to stop him from loving me in this way. May Your hand of protection be over our marriage and let our marriage be glorifying to You. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Prayer for Strength for My Husband
Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid, neither be dismayed: for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” -Joshua 1:9
Lord, I ask that You would strengthen my husband according to Your will for Him. When he feels discouraged or afraid, make Your Almighty presence known to him. Fill him with a godly courage and a strength enough for all of the tasks before him today. Lord, You command us to be strong and courageous and You promise us strength as we come to You. May my husband come to You for strength and find it as he seeks You. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Prayer for Peace for My Husband
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. -Colossians 3:15
Lord, I pray that You would bless my husband with Your all-consuming peace. Where there is anything that hinders this peace from guarding his heart, bring it to the surface and help him to overcome these areas. I pray that he would be filled with Your peace above all else and that he would seek You when his heart is troubled. May Your peace be with him in all things, in Jesus Name, Amen.
Prayer to Be the Wife God Calls Me To Be
Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. -Ephesians 5:22
Lord, I surrender my marriage to You. I commit my heart towards my husband to You and Your will. Show me how to submit in the way that You call me to. I know that everything around me calls me to do the opposite, but I ask that Your Spirit would work in my heart to teach me and shape me and mold me to be the wife that You call me to be to my husband. Open my eyes to the needs of my husband and help me to support him as he leads our family. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Prayer for My Husband’s Role in Our Family
For the husband is the head of the wife, and Christ also is the head of the assembly, being himself the savior of the body. -Ephesians 5:23
Lord, I pray that You would draw my husband’s heart to You as he seeks to lead our family. May Your Spirit work in His heart to be the husband and father that You call him to be. Convict me of anything that I do that would hinder his growth in this. I ask that Your love would teach him what it means to lead me and to lead our children closer to You and Your will. Strengthen him for moments when it is hard and give him a sense of purpose as he leads our family. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Prayer for My Husband’s Fatherhood
As you know, we exhorted, comforted, and implored every one of you, as a father does his own children, to the end that you should walk worthily of God, who calls you into his own Kingdom and glory. -1 Thessalonians 2:11-12
Lord, I pray that You would be the guide to my husband as he fathers our children. Teach him how to father them in the way that You call him to. I pray that he would be an encouragement to them, a comfort and a guide to lead them to walk in faith and to grow in You. I pray that his life would be an example to them of Your love. I ask that You would bring joy to my husband in his fatherhood, may he delight in his children as You delight in us. Where Satan tries to work in his fatherhood, may my husband stand firm in You. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Prayer for My Husband’s Wisdom with Our Finances
Every prudent man acts from knowledge, but a fool exposes folly. -Proverbs 13:16
For which of you, desiring to build a tower, doesn’t first sit down and count the cost, to see if he has enough to complete it? -Luke 14:28
Lord, thank you for the financial situation that we are in. You have blessed us greatly in many ways. I surrender our finances to You today. I ask that You would give my husband wisdom when it comes to our finances. Teach him to act from knowledge and to think ahead when it comes to our finances. I pray that You would teach him to first sit down and pray about financial decisions. Help us to be in alignment with our finances and to both have a heart of generosity. May You be what leads his heart and not money or greed. I pray against any of Satan’s lies that would pull Him away from Your plan for him with our finances. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Prayer for My Husband’s Friendships
Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens his friend’s countenance. -Proverbs 27:17
Lord, I pray for my husband’s friendships. I pray that you would place godly men in his life that he can grow closer with. May these friendships bless You and help them to sharpen each other as godly men. Bring accountability and encouragement and fellowship to his friendships and convict him of any relationships that do not bring glory to You. Give him courage to reach out to others where he is in need of friendship and place him in others’ hearts as well. May his friendships be a blessing to You and to him. In Jesus Name, Amen.

This is the day that the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it! -Psalm 118:24
Father, I pray for my husband’s day today. I pray that You would bless him and make Your presence known to him today. Let him rejoice in You today and find joy and peace in each moment. Where Satan tries to lie or scheme, bring Your Spirit into his heart and open his eyes. May he walk in Your victory and righteousness today and bring You glory as he does Your will. In Jesus Name, Amen.

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men. -Colossians 3:23
Lord, I pray for my husband’s work. I lift his job up to You. I ask that You would enter into his work and make Your presence known. May his work be done for You above all else. Give him a holy vision for work and help him to find purpose and profit in his work. Where he is not working well, convict him in these areas. May he find a balance of hard work without laziness or overworking. Help me to be an encouragement and support to him in his work. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Prayer to Forgive Each Other Quickly in Marriage
Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do. -Colossians 3:13
Lord, convict me when I need to forgive my husband. I commit my heart and hurts to You right now. Right now I am feeling hurt by [area of hurt]. I choose to forgive [husband’s name] for this hurt. I pray that my heart will align with Your will in this. Lord, I ask that You would also work in my husband’s heart and convict him to forgive quickly. Let us both bear with each other in love and forgive as we have received countless mercies from You. Where Satan tries to gain a foothold, tear it down. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Prayer for Victory in Spiritual Warfare for My Husband
For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. -Ephesians 6:12
Be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. -James 4:7
Lord, I pray that my husband would know of the spiritual victory that you have for Him in Christ. I ask that Your Spirit would come upon him and strengthen him to do battle as you have called him to. Open his eyes to the warfare around him and equip him to know who his battle is against. I pray that he would learn to put on Your armor every day and that he would have the strength to stand against Satan. Teach him to submit to you in all things and to resist Satan, knowing that in doing so, he will have victory. Thank you for the victory that You promise us. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Why Every Wife Needs to Pray for Her Husband
Praying for your husband is about far more than him becoming the husband you desire or keeping him safe and steadfast. I used to think that prayer lists like this were for just that.
But praying for your husband does so much more for your marriage than you can even imagine.
Praying for your husband leads to:
- Stronger marriage
- Trusting God with your marriage & husband
- Being a Godly wife
- Battling spiritual warfare
- Speaks God’s blessings over him
- Deeper intimacy with each other
And so much more. Don’t let Satan fool you into thinking your prayers aren’t going to do anything. Take time to fervently pray for your husband and for your marriage and watch as God transforms and moves.
How to Pray Over Your Husband
Learning to pray for your husband takes time but more importantly, it takes obedience. As we just start praying, God teaches us how we can grow in this area.
When I started praying for my husband, I came across the book, The Power of a Praying Wife. This taught me a lot about praying specifically and fervently for my husband and my marriage.
Here are some of the things I’ve learned about how to pray for your husband.
- Be Fervent – keep praying, every day. When you don’t feel like it, pray. When you don’t know if God is answering, pray. When you aren’t sure what to say, pray. Pray hard and consistently. It really helps to have specific prayers printed out or written down that you can turn to daily.
- Be Surrendered – We all have an idea of what we want from our husband, for our husband and in marriage, but God knows these things and His ways are so much higher. As you trust this, you can surrender fully as you pray. Try to take a posture of surrender as you pray for your husband and God will bless this!
- Be Submitted to God First – As wives, we are called to submit to our husbands and this is so important. But most importantly we need to submit to God first. Ask God to work in your heart to desire what He desires and submit to His plan above all else. As you do this, you will find yourself naturally learning to submit to your husband and to pray for him as God calls you to.
- Learn to Trust God – Learning to trust God with our prayers is hard but so important. As we learn to trust His plan for us is good and that He will provide what we need, we can pray surrendered and fervently in powerful ways.
- How to Pray Over Your Marriage – Much in the same way as praying over your husband specifically, praying for your marriage is so important! I would encourage you to use these same tips and pray fervently and surrendered, trusting that God is at work in your marriage. Seek out Scriptures on what God calls you to in marriage and strive to follow Him, no matter what your husband does. And where things don’t go as you hope, pray and surrender to the Lord, trusting His timing.
Don’t miss these prayers for your family too!
How Do I Bless My Husband?
Praying for our husband and our marriage is a powerful way to bless him. But sometimes, I want to find more ways to bless him.
Love Him in His Way
I find that knowing the love language of your spouse is so helpful in finding ways to bless him. If he loves quality time, set aside time in the evening or once a week for just him. If he is an acts of service kind of guy, do something that he is dreading doing that week just because.
Pay Attention to Your Words
Speaking well of and to your husband will bless him tremendously as well. Our words have an impact and when we speak words of life and encouragement, it is visible their effect.
To be honest, I often struggle with this because at the end of a long day I’m grumpy and can’t stand my husband tracking his dirty shoes through the freshly mopped kitchen. It’s in those moments that words of frustration or attitude slip through my lips and taint the entire evening. It’s amazing what a few loving words in those moments do for him.
Make His Priorities Yours
So often my husband and I have different ideas of what’s important. When Saturday rolls around, I have a to-do list that is much different than his. When date night comes, my idea of fun can often look different.
It’s one thing to willingly do what your husband wants to do or allow him to do his to-do’s instead of yours, it’s another to make his priorities yours.
This takes practice and it’s something I try to do in small bits, but when my husband can tell I genuinely want what he wants, it blesses him in big ways!
How Do I Inspire My Husband?
Oh how often I want to inspire my husband – to spend more time with the Lord, with the kids, with me. To work hard. To take care of things.
But more often than not, this desire to inspire him comes across as nagging.
We can inspire our husbands simply by living as God calls us to live and allowing that to shine.
Spend time in the Word. Work hard within your home. Create space for him to do the things you want him to be able to do. But stop and let God take it from there.
We are not the Holy Spirit to our husbands. In the same way that we feel convicted and encouraged to do something, our husbands need the working of the Holy Spirit. Our job is to encourage and bless him as he listens.
What is God’s purpose for marriage?
“For this cause a man will leave his father and mother, and will be joined to his wife. Then the two will become one flesh.” This mystery is great, but I speak concerning Christ and of the church. -Ephesians 5:31-32
Marriage is a beautiful illustration of God’s love for us. It is a symbol of this divine truth. God created marriage as a blessing but also as a powerful way to shine the light of His love to those around us.
Keep this in mind as you pray for your marriage. The goal is not to have a “happy marriage” or even the American dream. The goal is to shine the light of Christ through your marriage.
So when your husband disappoints you or lets you down, how can you pray through this situation in a way that shines the light of Christ?
The Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.” -Genesis 2:18
I love this reminder when I think about the purpose of marriage. Woman was created for man. Man needed something more.
This truth is spelled out beautifully in the book, Captivating. We have a powerful purpose in our marriage. As you pray for your husband and your marriage, remember this purpose.
Can prayer change my husband?
We often want to pray for our husbands to change. I’m with you there – there are things that I desire from or for my husband that I want to see change in. But God’s plan is so much bigger.
The biggest thing that changes as we pray for our husbands is our own hearts. God strengthens us and softens us to His plan for our husbands.
Yes, prayer can change your husband. But that is not the goal. As we pray for our husbands, let us be open to God’s guidance and leading of our own hearts.
Let us seek God’s will for our husband and for our marriage above all else. And as we wait for the changes we desire, let us allow God to shape our desires to align with His will.
