Tips on How to Pray Through Spiritual Warfare

Pray Out Loud

There is power in speaking our prayers aloud. Satan cannot read our minds and when we speak and proclaim God’s sovereignty over our situation, we remind Satan of where our hearts stand firm. I know we cannot always pray out loud, but when you can, I would encourage you to give it a try. There is power in spoken prayer.

Pray Scripture

In the same way, praying Scripture and speaking Scripture aloud is incredibly powerful. God’s Word is our weapon against Spiritual warfare. When you can incorporate Scripture into your prayers, I would really encourage you to do so. Many of the prayers below will have Scripture incorporated.

When we pray Scripture, we can know we are praying the will of God over our situation. And when you don’t know how to incorporate it, sometimes just speaking a verse aloud is a powerful way to bring you healing and hope in a moment of struggle.

Pray With Other Believers

We are created for community. In a community, we have accountability, support and encouragement. In community, we have the opportunity to serve. In community, we can come alongside each other and love as God has called us to.

So when you are struggling, I would encourage you to find other believers to pray with. This may look like calling up your best friend, reaching out to a mentor or the pastor of your church. Or this may look like stepping out of your comfort zone and joining a bible study or Christian support group. In whatever way, find someone who can pray with you and this will help and encourage you in your battle in so many ways.

Write Down Prayers

When I started writing down prayers was when my prayer life really transformed. It’s so easy to get sidetracked as we pray. And having written specific and fervent prayers has been a powerful way for me to stay steadfast in prayer.

Start With Gratitude

When we come to the Lord in thanksgiving, powerful things happen. It reorients our minds to the ways in which God has blessed us and been faithful to us. This is a powerful way to stand against Satan and his lies. Take a minute each day to write down 3-5 things you are grateful for. This is a powerful way to start battle in Spiritual warfare.

Pray for Open Eyes

Ask the Lord to open your eyes. There is so much that is unseen. The heavenly realms hold a battle between good and evil. This is going on all around us all the time. Ask God to reveal the lies, the schemes and the plans that Satan has working against You and ask His Spirit to enter into You in this battle. When our eyes are opened to the true battle, that is when we can truly take a stand.

Who is Satan and What is Spiritual Warfare?

Spiritual warfare is a battle that rages all around us. It is behind so much of what we struggle with. And today we are going to dive into the topic followed by some of the powerful spiritual warfare prayers that have helped me to do battle.

Satan is a Hebrew word that means “adversary”. Satan may be the leader of all demons but we know that there were many fallen angels that work as our adversaries. (Revelation 12:4, Jude 1:6, 2 Peter 2:4)

This was new to me, even recently. I’ve always pictured Satan as one being and because of this, I’ve believed he had more power than he does.

But angels, especially fallen ones, have nowhere near the power of our God.

Satan cannot read minds. He cannot thwart God’s plan. He cannot be everywhere at once.

But he is real and he is your enemy. He is studying you. He is watching and waiting to do everything he can to convince you that you have no hope and no victory in Christ.

So we need to be alert and we need to be prepared (1 Peter 5:8).

So although Satan is not all-powerful, he is still at work in this broken world and we must be alert and prepared to fight this battle every single day. His arrows are flying at us constantly, but in Christ, we can take up the shield of faith and extinguish every single one.

In prayer and truth, there is power to overcome Satan’s attacks and stand firm in faith.

What is Spiritual Warfare Victory?

Christ has given us the power to overcome Satan. We may have trouble in this world (John 16:33) but in Christ, who has overcome the world, we can walk in victory.

When we face Spiritual warfare, or Satan’s attempts to steal us away from the abundant life Christ offers us, we must remember that victory is ours already.

The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.” He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. -Luke 10:17-18

Jesus sent the disciples to cast out demons and in this beautiful description (verse 18) he says that he saw Satan fall from the heavenly places. He watched as the disciples used His Heavenly power to cast out Satan.

There was a time several years ago where I was overcome with anxiety, pain and heartbreak. Things from my past resurfaced and I struggled. Satan entered into that time and spoke lies that God didn’t love me, that I was worthless and unlovable, that these painful trials were a shame that I must live in.

I was unaware of how to battle the lies and find God in this dark time. My faith faltered and I thank God that He continued to pursue me.

Spiritual warfare victory is not in avoiding trials and pain. We live in a broken world and we will face these things. But victory is in walking in the abundance and hope that Christ promises us in the midst of our trials.

When the anxiety or painful memories resurface now, I know what needs to be done. I know that the lies are Satan’s attempt to steal my joy and my hope. And although they are painful, I can cling to Christ and the victory He has won for me.

How to Give it to God

The Holy Spirit and Spiritual Warfare

When you accept Jesus, the Holy Spirit enters into you and lives within you. This, Jesus told his disciples, was even greater than being with Jesus himself. (John 16:7)

Jesus was only human and with so many capabilities but the Holy Spirit lives within each of us and comforts us and guides us and sanctifies us and restores us.

Right now you have the power of the Holy Spirit of God inside you. Remember this as you face Spiritual Warfare. Remember this as you pray and stand against Satan’s attacks. Remember the victory that Christ won lives in you right now.
